- An explainable biomedical foundation model via large-scale concept-enhanced vision–language pretraining (Nature: Machine Learning, 2026-08-17) — This model shows that pairing vision encoders with explicit scientific concepts — rather than free-form captions — dramatically improves both data efficiency and interpretability on scarce labeled data. The same recipe maps cleanly onto remote-sensing foundation models for hydrology: pretraining on paired satellite imagery and geoscience-literature concepts (land cover classes, flood stages, soil moisture states) could yield models that explain why they flag a pixel as flooded, not just that they do. The barrier to attempting this has always been labeled-data scarcity plus black-box opacity; this paper reduces both simultaneously.
